Ottawa — It was an historic moment for both Dick Harris and the riding of Cariboo-Prince George. Earlier this week, in the Speaker’s Lounge of the House of Commons, Mr. Harris took the Oath of Office for the seventh time.
With 17 and a half years under his belt, veteran MP Harris is one of four of the longest-serving MPs with consecutive terms in the federal Conservative caucus. The riding of Cariboo-Prince George (including in its former configuration as Prince George-Bulkley Valley) can also claim MP Harris as their longest serving federal representative. Harris noted that taking his oath this time was extraordinary in light of these unique firsts.
“After nearly 18 years, you’d think I’d get used to it,” reflected Harris, “but each time I take this oath it reminds me once again of the honour and privilege that has been bestowed on me by my constituents and in whom they have placed their confidence and trust.”
Harris also returns to Ottawa as the BC/Yukon Caucus Chair, a post that ensures the issues and concerns of the region remain paramount before the Cabinet. “We have a great mix of experience and also some new blood in our regional Caucus and we’re ready to hit the ground running,” concluded Harris.
